Title: Midtown Crossings identity design and print communications materials (2001)
Client: University of Minnesota Design Institute, Minneapolis, MN
Project: The Midtown Greenway is a bike and pedestrian pathway located in a former sunken rail corridor in South Minneapolis. The Design Institute spearheaded a workshop that involved local, national and international architects, artists and engineers to brainstorm design ideas for the bridges crossing the Greenway at street level (which must be rebuilt over the next 30 years) and encourage city officials to incorporate artists in the actual design process. Communications materials were designed to brand the workshop event, public presentation and future activities related to the Greenway’s revitalization. Because the Greenway can feel unwelcoming (particularly where it crosses into more deserted areas of the city), the branding effort sought to present possible family-friendly uses—for example, as a recreational area or as a quick and environmentally friendly route to downtown. Designed by Deborah Littlejohn and Santiago Piedrafita.

above: This poster was produced for the DI Midtown Crossings design workshop. The front side of the poster (left) announced a presentation of the design outcomes of the workshop, inviting the public to attend. The reverse side (right) served as a 'Knowledge Map' of the Greenway that aided the design teams in producing their ideas.
